WIC is the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children. WIC provides health assessments and referrals, nutrition education, breastfeeding support and supplemental foods for qualified families throughout Allegany County. We have appointments available in Cumberland, Westernport, Lonaconing, and Frostburg.

Visit with Author Elizabeth Zunon, Illustrator of numerous award-winning books: The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, Don’t Call
Me Grandma, One Plastic Bag, Poems in the Attic, A President From Hawaii, and My Hands Sing the Blues.
• Credits her success to being influenced by her childhood in the West African Ivory Coast. Surrounded by the bright, vibrant colors of her homeland’s fabrics and tropical vegetation, her love of color and pattern is evident in her work. When starting a new book project, she always buys a new paintbrush and a new paint color that she’s never used before.
• Grandpa Cacao, her first venture in writing and illustrating, is based on her father’s childhood memories of her grandfather and chocolate. It will be released in May 2019.
• Lives in Albany, N.Y., where she explores a multicultural world through painting, beading, sewing, and collage.

Read to Opie

Children can come to the library and read a book of their choice to Opie, a Havanese mix, a certified therapy dog. Opie is part of the Study Buddies program for schools and libraries. Opie was adopted from the Allegany County Animal Shelter at three months of age. He is currently nine years old. Opie will be at the LaVale Library every other Saturday from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Reading to Opie will help improve a child’s reading skills.








Stepping On Classes

A Stepping On Class can help you avoid a dangerous and costly fall so you can keep doing the things you love to do. In just 7 weeks, you'll learn:
-To identify and remove or avoid fall hazards both inside and outside of your home
-How vision, hearing, medication and footwear affect your risk of falling
-Strength and balance exercises you can adapt to your individual level
-To get back on your feet the right way if you do fall.

Dr. FrankenMaker's Lab: Bring Your Creature To Life!

When: Wednesday, May 01, 2019 - 5:00 PM
Where: George's Creek Library at Meeting Room

Dr. FrankenMaker invites you to his lab to explore the newest technology to bring your creatures to life! Young FrankenMakers first design their creature in TinkerCAD, following the specific parameters set by Dr. FrankenMaker himself. Once the designing is finished, each creature is sent to the 3-D printer to be brought to life!** FrankenMakers also have the opportunity to travel into virtual reality through Oculus Rift to sculpt and paint using "Medium."

This program is a cutting edge STEAM program designed to introduce kids to art and technology that is not only fascinating and fun, but associated with growth industries, such as movies, game design, virtual reality, engineering and additive manufacturing.


**Creatures will be ready for pick-up at the library of participation or at the Allegany Arts Council within a week.

This free program is offered by the Allegany Arts Council with support from United Way, Allegany Public Library System, and the Maryland State Arts Council.

All participants must be aged 8-13 to participate and must register through the Allegany Arts Council by calling 301.777.2787 or emailing skennedy@alleganyarts.org

Health Rocks!

A Free Healthy Living Program for Ages 8-14
Come have fun at the library with 4-H. Snacks provided. Health Rocks is a 12 month free program providing weekly health education and mentoring sessions to youth ages 8 to 14 years old. Interested youth do not need to be enrolled in 4-H to attend.
Topics include: Substance abuse prevention, health lifestyle choices, mentorships with community leaders, building leadership skills.
Program offered by University of Maryland Extension Allegany County 4-H Program.

AHEC West Diabetes & Prevention Program

AHEC West Diabetes & Prevention Program, for ages 18 and and older. The Diabetes Prevention Program includes lessons, handouts, and other resources to help you make healthy changes. A lifestyle coach, specially trained to lead the program, to help you learn new skills, encourage you to set and meet goals, and keep you motivated. You will learn to eat better without having to give up the foods you love and add physical activity such as taking a walk to your weekly schedule. The coach will also facilitate discussions and help make the program fun and engaging. A support group of people with similar goals and challenges. Together, you can share ideas, celebrate successes, and work to overcome obstacles. In some programs, the participants stay in touch with each other during the week. It may be easier to make changes when you’re working as a group than doing it on your own.

To be eligible for the Diabetes Prevention Program, there is some eligibility criteria. Someone could be either diagnosed with prediabetes from their provider or they can take a “self-assessment” quiz. The quiz is really easy. For your online registration form, could you reference the online quiz from the CDCs website? The language to reference it can say: “Find out if you are at risk for prediabetes and type 2 diabetes. Dr. FrankenMaker's Lab: Bring Your Creature To Life!

Dr. FrankenMaker invites you to his lab to explore the newest technology to bring your creatures to life! Young FrankenMakers first design their creature in TinkerCAD, following the specific parameters set by Dr. FrankenMaker himself. Once the designing is finished, each creature is sent to the 3-D printer to be brought to life!** FrankenMakers also have the opportunity to travel into virtual reality through Oculus Rift to sculpt and paint using "Medium."

This program is a cutting edge STEAM program designed to introduce kids to art and technology that is not only fascinating and fun, but associated with growth industries, such as movies, game design, virtual reality, engineering and additive manufacturing.


**Creatures will be ready for pick-up at the library of participation or at the Allegany Arts Council within a week.

This free program is offered by the Allegany Arts Council with support from United Way, Allegany Public Library System, and the Maryland State Arts Council.

Experience the beauty of our galaxy during a showing of "From Earth to the Universe”, a 30 minute dome film. Afterward, you’ll have the opportunity to take a MUCH closer look at the skies outside with telescopes. An astrophysicist will be on hand to answer questions.
This event is free and registration is not required. Bring a friend or a date!
The dome film and after-film telescope time will take place at the Multimedia Learning Center located in room 186 of the Gira Center for Communication and Information Technology at Frostburg State University.

Each meeting will be organized around a theme: relationships, parenting, organizing time, care giving, financial security, domestic violence, emotional health, growing old, employment, physical health, cultural issues, racial issues, political issues, religious issues, etc. We will concentrate on the personal impact of these topics, with the awareness of each woman's influence within her family, community, and society at large. And after we solve the world's programs, there will be dancing and cookies. :)

AHEC West Diabetes & Prevention Program

AHEC West Diabetes & Prevention Program, for ages 18 and and older. The Diabetes Prevention Program includes lessons, handouts, and other resources to help you make healthy changes. A lifestyle coach, specially trained to lead the program, to help you learn new skills, encourage you to set and meet goals, and keep you motivated. You will learn to eat better without having to give up the foods you love and add physical activity such as taking a walk to your weekly schedule. The coach will also facilitate discussions and help make the program fun and engaging. A support group of people with similar goals and challenges. Together, you can share ideas, celebrate successes, and work to overcome obstacles. In some programs, the participants stay in touch with each other during the week. It may be easier to make changes when you’re working as a group than doing it on your own.

To be eligible for the Diabetes Prevention Program, there is some eligibility criteria. Someone could be either diagnosed with prediabetes from their provider or they can take a “self-assessment” quiz. The quiz is really easy. For your online registration form, could you reference the online quiz from the CDCs website? The language to reference it can say: “Find out if you are at risk for prediabetes and type 2 diabetes. AHEC West Diabetes & Prevention Program

Where: George's Creek Library at Teen Room

AHEC West Diabetes & Prevention Program, for ages 18 and and older. The Diabetes Prevention Program includes lessons, handouts, and other resources to help you make healthy changes. A lifestyle coach, specially trained to lead the program, to help you learn new skills, encourage you to set and meet goals, and keep you motivated. You will learn to eat better without having to give up the foods you love and add physical activity such as taking a walk to your weekly schedule. The coach will also facilitate discussions and help make the program fun and engaging. A support group of people with similar goals and challenges. Together, you can share ideas, celebrate successes, and work to overcome obstacles. In some programs, the participants stay in touch with each other during the week. It may be easier to make changes when you’re working as a group than doing it on your own.

To be eligible for the Diabetes Prevention Program, there is some eligibility criteria. Someone could be either diagnosed with prediabetes from their provider or they can take a “self-assessment” quiz. The quiz is really easy. For your online registration form, could you reference the online quiz from the CDCs website? The language to reference it can say: “Find out if you are at risk for prediabetes and type 2 diabetes. Take the online quiz: https://www.cdc.gov/widgets/Prediabetes/html5/iframe.html. If you score a 5 or higher, please contact Catie Wampole at 240-362-7715

I just spoke with our staff who come to the libraries, and they wanted me to reinforce how much they enjoy being there! The staff is always welcoming, sharing refrigerator space for lunches. Library staff go out of their way to help if questions arise, and never complain if a child reacts loudly to getting their finger stuck for a blood sample as part of their WIC appointment (we try to close the doors for sound proofing). Our staff really do appreciate the opportunity to work in such pleasant surroundings with wonderful people!

German Fairy Tales and Poe's "The Fall of the House of Usher"

Dr. Amy Branam Armiento will be presenting an inside look at Edgar Allan Poe's story, "The Fall of the House of Usher" at the Frostburg Library on October 17th. Dr. Amy Branam Armiento is the associate professor of English at Frostburg State University and was elected president of the Poe Studies Association in 2018, an internationally recognized non-profit organization focused on the life and works of Edgar Allan Poe.

"The Fall of the House of Usher" is a short story about about a mysterious family living in a seemingly doomed, dark country mansion and is considered one of Poe’s most terrifying tales.
