Frequently Asked Questions – Phase III of ACLS Reopening

How does sidewalk service work?

Step 1: Place holds on the items you’d like to check out at or by phone.

Telephone service is available Monday through Thursday 10:30 AM – 5:30 PM.

See How to place a request online for instructions

Step 2: Library staff will contact you via phone once your item has arrived to arrange a day and time for pick-up.  Please contact your library if you need to update your phone contact information.

Step 3: Arrive at the library and wait at the social distancing markers in front of the sidewalk service area while staff provide further instructions and prepare your order. Please wear your face mask and maintain 6-feet between yourself and others. Face masks are required for all sidewalk service interactions.

Step 4: Staff will notify you when it is safe to approach the table and retrieve your order. You will be able to check out up to 10 items per visit.

Step 5: Enjoy your items and please take all returns to the book drops. Staff will not be able to accept returns at the sidewalk service area. Please remove items from bags and containers before placing in the drop. The library will NOT be accepting donations at this time.

Can I pick up holds for someone else?

Yes, you may pick-up items for others in your household, but you will only be able to pick-up 10 items per visit total.

How can I pay my fines?

Online payments are currently not available and we will not be accepting payments at sidewalk service.  Fine related blocks will still be lifted for online services and will be considered on a case by case basis for sidewalk service.

I don’t always know what I want, I like to browse the shelves at the library.  How can I browse items?

At this time, sidewalk pick-up service is only available for requested items.  You can use our catalog to browse by author, subject, and call number.

Are you going to sanitize my holds before I pick them up?

Library materials have been quarantined for at least five (5) days and will only be handled by staff following safe handling procedures and wearing appropriate PPE.

Do I have to wear a mask for sidewalk service?

Yes, we are requiring a mask for sidewalk service interactions to reduce the risk of spreading infectious diseases.

Can we return our library materials now?

Yes, returns can be taken to the book drops at the Frostburg, George’s Creek, South Cumberland, Washington Street, and Westernport Libraries.  Staff will not be accepting returns at sidewalk pickup, please take all returns to the book drops. The LaVale Library (and bookdrop) is closed for renovations.

Can I donate my books to the Library now?

The Library is not able to accept any book donations at this time and we are unable to advise on book donation alternatives.

Does this mean I can visit the library now?

All Library locations remain closed to the public. Sidewalk service is currently being piloted. Do not visit any location unless library staff have advised you that your materials are available. Please visit for updates to service.

When will the Library re-open to visitors?

The library is monitoring the pandemic situation in our area and surrounding communities to determine when it will be safe to allow public entrance into the buildings.  The primary consideration in planning reopening is the safety of patrons and staff. Just as libraries are unique in offering shared spaces and resources, open to all, we are uniquely challenged when it comes to reopening all of our services.

Are you going to be programs?

We are also offering virtual programs for all ages as well as outdoor story times through the fall.

Can I just come in and print one thing? Or check my email?

Unfortunately, we cannot provide any building access to members of the public at this time. Please check for updates to service as we work towards reopening.

Where can I go to access the internet (work on a resume, apply for social services, pay my bills)?

All library locations offer WiFi access from outside, and in some cases the parking lots.  Please follow social distancing guidelines when using the WiFi around our buildings.
