Library Card Sign Up Month -September 2020

September is Library Card Sign-Up Month, a time when the Allegany County Library System joins the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries nationwide to remind our communities that a library card gives you the tools you need to succeed and provides opportunities to pursue your dreams and passions.

This year, DC’s Wonder Woman is embarking on a mission to champion the power of a library card as Library Card Sign-up Month Honorary Chair. In her new role, Wonder Woman will promote the value of libraries and encourage everyone to get their very own library card.

In the course of the global pandemic, our library staff jumped into action to plan modified services to meet the rapidly changing needs of the community. The Allegany County Library System is offering a range of events and services that reflect those changing needs. Sidewalk pickup services for books and movies, virtual story times, online book discussions, downloadable books and audiobooks, and streaming movies are just a few of the services provided regularly at this time and free of charge.

One notable change our community is experiencing this September is the transition to online learning. In it’s fourth school year, the Allegany County Library System has partnered with Allegany County Board of Education, Bishop Walsh School, and Calvary Christian Academy to register every K-12 student for a student library card, or a STAR Card. Students can use their STAR Card to access the vast array of resources and tools to help them succeed in the virtual classroom. From research guides to live homework help, the library is here to support online learning. Signing up for a library card is easier than ever this year with online registration! Sign up for a library card and start using online resources and sidewalk services today. Parents wishing to obtain their child’s STAR Card number, please call your local library or submit a request on our website.

Since 1987, Library Card Sign-up Month has been held each September to mark the beginning of the school year. During the month, the ALA and libraries unite together in a national effort to ensure everyone signs up for their own library card.
