Gifts, Donations and Memorials
Donating towards the purchase of a new book is a great way to celebrate an Anniversary, Birthday, Graduation or any Special Occasion and benefit the entire community. Each item purchased with your donation will include a plaque commemorating your special occasion. The Allegany County Library System is a 501(c)3 registered charitable organization, so your donations are tax deductible.
Donations can also be made to honor and mark the life of a significant person in your life.
Gifts
Through the Gifts donation, library materials are purchased for placement in the general collection for all patrons to use and enjoy. It’s easy, simple to do and your donation is tax deductible!
Memorials
A donation in memory of a loved one may be made as a memorial. The library will notify the family of the loved one with a letter, and a special book plate can be placed on the material.
Organizational and Business Donations
The Library invites civic groups and businesses to donate through the Gifts Program. Each year a specific sum can be donated for one area or several areas of the collection, such as children’s collections, or towards special programs, such as funding a performer for Summer Reading Club.
If you would like to discuss your estate plan or donation ideas, please feel free to contact Lisa McKenney at 301-777-1200 or lmckenney@alleganycountylibrary.info
Donating Used Books
We welcome donations of gently used books that are in good condition and likely to meet the needs of our collection. Eligible items may be added to the library’s collection or, if they aren’t needed, shared with the community through our Free Reads shelves.
Because of space limitations and our Collection Development Policy, we aren’t able to accept every donation.
Before bringing in your books, please review our Used Book Donation Guidelines for a complete list of accepted and non-accepted items, as well as tips for preparing your donation.
