Yoga Wellness

Where: George's Creek Library at Meeting Room

Yoga and Wellness classes begin with yoga from 10-11 am led by Leslee Wigfield. The style of yoga is suitable for all levels, including those brand new to it. Wellness wisdom and discussion will follow directly after yoga from 11- 11:30 am and will be led by Jen Thomas. If the weather is nice, we will meet outside behind the library.

Please bring a yoga mat and water. Yoga mats are provided if needed by reaching out to Jen Thomas at 301-777-9150, Ext.109.Overflow parking will be available at the Wilhelm-Eakin Funeral Home next to the library.
There is no cost to attend. Bring a friend!

Stretching to EmPower is a Yoga Wellness program to educate, motivate, strengthen and empower women (although men are welcome to attend!) This program is made possible by funding comes from the Federal Office on Women's Health and Area Health Education Center West, and other community partners.

WIC is the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children. WIC provides health assessments and referrals, nutrition education, breastfeeding support and supplemental foods for qualified families throughout Allegany County. We have appointments available in Cumberland, Westernport, Lonaconing, and Frostburg.

AHEC West Diabetes & Prevention Program

When: Wednesday, July 17, 2019 - 6:00 PM
Where: George's Creek Library at Teen Room

AHEC West Diabetes & Prevention Program, for ages 18 and and older. The Diabetes Prevention Program includes lessons, handouts, and other resources to help you make healthy changes. A lifestyle coach, specially trained to lead the program, to help you learn new skills, encourage you to set and meet goals, and keep you motivated. You will learn to eat better without having to give up the foods you love and add physical activity such as taking a walk to your weekly schedule. The coach will also facilitate discussions and help make the program fun and engaging. A support group of people with similar goals and challenges. Together, you can share ideas, celebrate successes, and work to overcome obstacles. In some programs, the participants stay in touch with each other during the week. It may be easier to make changes when you’re working as a group than doing it on your own.

To be eligible for the Diabetes Prevention Program, there is some eligibility criteria. Someone could be either diagnosed with prediabetes from their provider or they can take a “self-assessment” quiz. The quiz is really easy. For your online registration form, could you reference the online quiz from the CDCs website? The language to reference it can say: “Find out if you are at risk for prediabetes and type 2 diabetes. Take the online quiz: https://www.cdc.gov/widgets/Prediabetes/html5/iframe.html. If you score a 5 or higher, please contact Catie Wampole at 240-362-7715

Lawyer in the Library: Free Civil Legal Services

On Tuesday, October 31st, the George's Creek Library will host the Lawyer in the Library program, which provides free civil legal services to the community. No appointments are necessary and assistance is provided on a first-come, first served basis by Maryland Legal Aid staff. One-on-one advice is offered on a variety of civil legal issues including: bankruptcy, child custody and support, debt collection, expungements, government benefits, foreclosure, landlord/tenant, veterans’ benefits, and wage claims.
