Branch Volunteer- Library Aide Position Description


Position: Branch Volunteer- Library Aide

Hours vary by branch. Minimum requirement is typically 2 hours a week.
Locations: Various library locations – Frostburg, Georges Creek, LaVale, South Cumberland, Washington Street and Westernport

Reporting Relationship: This Position reports to the Branch Service Leader

Summary:

Performs a variety of duties related to the operation of a library branch including assisting with pulling, shelving and organizing library materials. Volunteers may also assist customers using the library’s public computers. Volunteers may also perform a variety of duties to assist library staff with programs for children, teens and adults.

Essential Functions:

  • Search for materials on the Pick Lists;
  • Assist customers by providing instruction in the use of the public computers;
  • Clean books and other materials;
  • Assist library staff with preparing for special programs, may include preparing name badges, gathering supplies, assembling information packets and other duties;
  • Provide assistance before and during the program with sign-in and crowd control;
  • Assist with clean-up after the conclusion of programs;

Standard Functions:

  • Is dependable and punctual;
  • Records volunteer hours;
  • Maintains a positive, friendly and cooperative attitude and provides consistent customer service;
  • Upholds all library policies and procedures of the Allegany County Library System;
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of alphabetical and numerical systems;
  • Ability to learn to operate relevant computer systems and office machines;
  • Ability to learn to maintain and organize library materials;
  • Ability to complete repetitive tasks with complete accuracy;
  • Ability to work independently and dependably to complete routine tasks;
  • Ability to effectively communicate with others; including the ability to effectively coach and guide others who may be experiencing difficulty or have questions;
  • Ability to refer information-seeking and reference-type questions to appropriate staff.

Minimum Qualifications

13 years of age with the ability to read, write and understand instructions.

Physical and Environmental Conditions of Work

Significant standing, walking, carrying, bending, reaching and handling, pushing and pulling. Requires physical agility and strength to bend, reach, lift, and carry (up to 25 lbs) over 60% of the time; and extensive use of a computer terminal. Ability to work with limited supervision. Ability to maintain composure in a work environment serving the public.
